Industry Training Authority “Now’s the Time” Campaign

The BC Chamber of Commerce is a supporting organization in the Industry Training Authority’s (ITA) “Now’s the Time” campaign.

The campaign is aimed at encouraging employers and apprentices to take advantage of the current economic slowdown to complete their technical training, upgrade their skillsets and get ready for the rebound.

Kudos: Opening of the Golden Ears Bridge satisfies a Langley Chamber of Commerce policy resolution with a 20-year pedigree

Persistence pays off in Fraser crossing – from the Langley Times, June 12, 2009:

The Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce is thrilled with the completion of the Golden Ears Bridge, to say the least, says executive director Lynn Whitehouse.

“The wheels of progress, whew!” said Whitehouse.

The chamber has carried the torch for a bridge across the Fraser River here for almost 20 years, and Whitehouse has an old resolution to the provincial body to prove it.

Provincial News

Legislature to be Called Back and Budget Tabled

The Provincial Legislature will be called back on August 25, 2009, shortly followed by the Budget, which is set to be tabled on September 1st.

The BC Chamber of Commerce will be holding a conference call to provide details on the provisions contained in the Budget and the fiscal position of the province.  As this Budget will be of extremely high interest to the media, we strongly encourage Member Chambers to participate in the call to ensure that they have the information they need to address media and member concerns.

Financial Hardship Property Tax Deferment Program

B.C.’s Financial Hardship Property Tax Deferment Program is now accepting applications. Eligible homeowners, with at least 15 per cent equity in their home, and who are experiencing financial hardship due to current economic conditions, can apply to defer their property tax payment for each of the next two years, once they receive their annual property tax notice.

This program is in addition to the existing Property Tax Deferment Program which benefits homeowners who are 55 years or older and eligible persons with disabilities. More information on the program is available online here.

The Business Council of British Columbia Presents the Outlook 2020: Shaping BC's Economic Future Summit Series

The Business Council's Summit Series, Outlook 2020: Shaping B.C.’s Economic Future aims to give business, community and government leaders a unique and informative opportunity to help define and shape Canada’s Pacific province immediately following the provincial election on May 12. This promises to be an important forum for steering the future of BC.

Chapter One of the Series, "The Life and Times of a Small Open Economy in a Changing World: British Columbia’s International Perspective" is taking place Tuesday, June 16, 2009, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

Conference Board of Canada Survey – MBF Education in Canada

The Conference Board of Canada is seeking perspectives on how well management, business, and finance (MBF) education in Canada prepares graduates for success in innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership.

The 9 minute, confidential survey includes questions regarding:

  • How well MBF programs do in producing graduates with the technical, interpersonal, and communication skills required for success;
  • Whether graduates of MBF programs are prepared to be successful leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators; and
  • What improvements could be made to MBF programs to produce graduates with improved skills, attitudes, behaviours, and ambition.

ICBC’s 2008 Annual Report now available

The Annual Report compares ICBC’s 2008 performance in relation to their 2008-2010 Service Plan and provides detailed reporting on their corporate goals and performance measures, as well as a discussion on financial results and their 2008 Financial Statements.

Community Adjustment Fund

Communities in Western Canada hit hard by the recession will be receiving $306 million in support from the Government of Canada for projects which will improve economic conditions in those communities.

The Community Adjustment Fund, being implemented in Western Canada by Western Economic Diversification Canada, is open to any organization in and around affected communities with priority given to projects that are located in rural, single industry communities, create new jobs, and build on existing partnerships and programs.  The final deadline for project submission is June 26, 2009.

Implementation of Federal Government’s Economic Action Plan

The Federal Government has implemented a number of measures over the past month relating to its Economic Action Plan.  The Economic Action Plan is the government’s stimulus package which includes measures intended to address four major priorities:

  • Reducing the tax burden on Canadian individuals, families and businesses
  • Stimulus spending that creates jobs
  • Helping the Canadians that are hardest hit by the recession
  • Strengthening the financial system and improving access to credit
