Announcement: Don’t let counterfeit bills spoil your holidays
During the holiday season, we can be busy and easily distracted—whether we’re on the buying or selling side of the checkout counter. Counterfeiters sometimes take advantage of this by picking the holidays to ramp up their fake cash operations. The Bank of Canada has developed a quick, easy method that you can use year-round to protect your cash. It’s called TiLL.
Use TiLL to check that your cash is good
Think of TiLL as the authorization process for cash transactions—just like an electronic authorization for credit and debit card payments. TiLL stands for Touch, Tilt, Look through, and Look at your bills. It’s an easy way to remember the quick actions for checking the security features built into the latest series of bills. Put your bills through TiLL before they go into your till.
For example, you can check three security features at the same time in just seconds using Look through. Hold the bill up to light. Check that the ghost image and number appear in the centre and that the dashes form a solid line.
TiLL is so simple to learn that your entire staff—including any last minute seasonal hires—can have it down in ten minutes. By routinely checking all bills before accepting them, you’ll spot the bad guys’ fake cash and make sure that you don’t inadvertently pass a counterfeit to your customers in their change.

With TiLL, it’s easy to check that your money is real: Touch, Tilt, Look through, Look at. Pull out a bill from the latest series—the ones with the metallic stripe—to learn as you read on.
|
Check: The raised ink on the large number, the portrait’s shoulder, and the text “Bank of Canada • Banque du Canada” feels thicker. |
|
Check: The coloured numbers and two-toned maple leaves in the metallic stripe change colour, and the tiny numbers match the bill’s value. Check: The dashes on the back shift from gold to green, and the numbers next to “CAN” match the bill’s value. |
|
Hold the bill to light to check three security features at once. Check: The irregular marks form an aligned puzzle number, the dashes form a continuous solid line, and the ghost image matches the portrait. |
|
Always check two or more security features. Compare a suspect bill against one you know is real. Look for differences, not similarities. |
