Business Leaders Vote to Rapidly Escalate BC’s Trade with China, India
Whistler, May 23, 2008 – An assembly of BC’s business leaders from across the province voted today to encourage the provincial government to aggressively pursue trade opportunities with Asia Pacific countries, especially China and India.
Gathered in Whistler for the 56th Annual General Meeting and Conference of the BC Chamber of Commerce, business delegates were unanimous in their support of recommendations made by the Provincial Government’s Asia Pacific Trade Council, and followed this support with recommendations of their own.
“We will be making recommendations to both Provincial and Federal governments,” said John Winter, President and CEO of the BC Chamber of Commerce. “That the Asia Pacific Trade Council’s proposals be implemented, and programs created that will benefit business relations between the province, China and India. Our specific concern is that the small business perspective be considered.”
Reports by both the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the Asia Pacific Trade Council have indicated the wealth of trade opportunities between the province and Asia Pacific. Moreover, those reports have indicated the need for rapid uptake of these opportunities, as the competition for them is fierce.
“We want to ensure that our governments do not allow these opportunities to pass BC business, especially small business, by,” continued Winter. “These prospects are unparalleled and it is imperative that we act quickly to equip businesses in BC with the capacity to secure them.”
