BC Chamber Applauds Government’s Intention to Register Off-Road Vehicles

Vancouver, November 10, 2009 – Chambers of Commerce from across the province welcomed the announcement today that the Provincial Government will introduce a new off-road vehicle (ORV) management framework over the next two years.

“All-season motorized sports represents a huge tourism opportunity for communities across the province, but the lack of registration and licensing has meant that a few irresponsible ORV riders have had a negative impact on the environment and legitimate riders,” states John Winter, President and CEO of the BC Chamber of Commerce.  “This announcement will go a long way towards addressing this issue while also ensuring that BC has a regulatory regime that is compatible with every other jurisdiction in North America.”

The framework will see new rules introduced over a 2 year period that will include mandatory vehicle registration on all ORVs, measures to improve safety and protect the environment, and initiatives to connect communities.

“For too long the attitude surrounding ORVs has meant BC has allowed individuals to operate ORVs with no protection for the public, the environment or for legitimate sellers of ORVs” continued Winter.  “These measures will for the first time allow law enforcement officers to track stolen ORVs which will be a great boost for legitimate retailers in BC.”
