BC Chamber of Commerce and UBCM Call for Northwest Transmission Line to be Resumed
Vancouver, September 25, 2008 – The Union of British Columbia Municipalities joined the BC Chamber of Commerce today in urging the Provincial Government to immediately resume the engineering and environmental permitting of the Northwest Transmission Line - a project which promised to open up the Northwest region of BC to important economic development, but which has been on hold for over half a year.
“The Northwest Transmission Line is essential to the development of the resource sector in Northwest BC,” says John Winter, President & CEO of the BC Chamber of Commerce. “New opportunities in mining, green power projects, forestry, oil and gas all stand to be gained by the completion of this project.”
Both UBCM and the BC Chamber of Commerce consider the Northwest Transmission Line to be a long-term investment in the economic and environmental development of Northwest BC, and are encouraging the provincial government to adopt the same approach.
“If the project is suspended indefinitely,” cautions Winter, “not only will this vital opportunity be abandoned, but the funds already spent on its development will have been wasted.”
